On Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 9 a.m., Mayor Ted Wheeler will host a fourth community conversation on homelessness this year at the Multnomah Arts Center Dance Studio in southwest Portland. Building on the first three community conversations over the past month in southeast, northeast and north Portland, Mayor Wheeler – joined by service providers, community advocates and people with lived experiences – will share how the City is addressing homelessness and housing instability while inviting community members to share their priorities and connect with organizations working in partnership with the City on this issue.
“At our first three community conversations we shared how our strategic actions and partnerships are effective in addressing homelessness. We know focusing on shelter, housing, and services works. On any given day, 12,000 people stay in housing who otherwise might’ve been homeless in the city and county because of our efforts. But we also know that those services need to be appropriately scaled up,” Mayor Wheeler said. “Community members are sharing valuable insight, insight that will inform how we navigate the challenges we will continue to face in alleviating this crisis. No other issue is a higher priority in this administration.”
The City of Portland and Multnomah County’s Joint Office of Homeless Services, the Portland Housing Bureau and several nonprofit providers including Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare and Transition Projects, will be among the organizations presenting. There will also be several additional organizations connecting attendees to resources for continued engagement.
As a precaution related to COVID-19, the Mayor’s office will be following Multnomah County’s recommendations in providing hand sanitizer stations at the event. We’re also asking those who have symptoms to consider staying home. Those unable to attend can share their input at this link. Recordings of the presentations and information provided at Saturday’s event will be on the Mayor’s website early next week.
