Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has signed a letter from the U.S. Conference of Mayors that calls for immediate action by the U.S. Senate on bipartisan gun legislation that has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Mayor Wheeler joins 230+ mayors nationwide in signing the letter, that has been sent to all members of the Senate.

“We have to work together to make our cities and countries safer,” said Mayor Wheeler. “Already in 2019, there have over 250 mass shootings. The recent tragic events in El Paso and Dayton are just reminders that we need Washington to act.”

The letter, addressed specifically to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, urges the leaders to call the Senate back to session to take up and pass bills that would strengthen the background check system. You can read the letter here.
