Mayor Ted Wheeler to reveal new action proposals for addressing climate crisis at two events in one day

Building on the City of Portland’s proud legacy of bold climate action and pushing the city’s environmental agenda further, Mayor Ted Wheeler will announce new climate policy commitments designed to put Portland on a trajectory to achieve its climate goals. The new policy commitments  will be unveiled at a press conference in Council Chambers at City Hall Friday, Dec. 13. Further discussion about climate action being taken by the City and regional partners will take place later the same day at a weekly Friday Forum hosted by the City Club of Portland. 

“I would like to thank the youth of our region for working with the City to push for meaningful action. In Portland, we value what kind of future we want our children to experience,” Mayor Wheeler said. “I look forward to sharing our next steps for success in addressing the climate crisis.”

Mayor Wheeler will be joined at both events by PGE President & CEO Maria Pope and TriMet General Manager Doug Kelsey, regional partners working closely with the City of Portland to meet 100% clean renewable energy, net-zero building and transportation goals.

The new climate policy commitments are the latest in a long list of proposals, initiatives and actions being taken by the city to address the climate crisis. Some of those actions include:

  • Appointing the advisory committee for the Portland Clean Energy Fund that delivers social equity benefits while pursuing carbon emission reductions
  • Restricting the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure
  • Creating stronger bike parking requirements in buildings to make sure all Portlanders have safe, secure and accessible bike parking
  • Expanding the number of buildings subject to the city’s deconstruction ordinance that prioritizes material salvage and reuse over landfill
