PBOT and Multnomah Country Library team up to make sure contest meets Stay Home. Save Lives requirements
(April 23, 2020) What do a unicorn, astronaut, jellyfish and Portland Trail Blazers point guard and five- time All-Star Damian Lillard have in common? All have been transformed into unique and colorful illustrations for Portland’s bike lanes and neighborhood greenways by students from across the Rose City. This May, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and Multnomah County Library are bringing back the Bike to Books Design Contest for its fourth year, and are encouraging Portland’s youth to design their own original bike lane art for Portland’s bike lanes at home for a chance to have their design installed on a bike lane by PBOT's striping crews.
“I am so pleased that this year’s Bike to Books contest will take place as scheduled,” said Transportation Commissioner Chloe Eudaly. “This program encourages artistic expression, literacy, and active transportation—I look forward to seeing what young Portlanders create this year. Thank you to PBOT, our Maintenance Operations striping crews, Multnomah County Library, and everyone who will participate in our 4th Annual Bike to Books Design Contest!”
Students living in Multnomah County, from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade, can easily participate in Portland’s “Bike to Books” May Bike Month design contest. This year is a little different. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and library locations being closed, design pages are available for download or you can request a copy to be mailed to you. Design pages are available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese.
Once your design is complete, scan or take a photo of both sides of your form and email it to PBOT at biketobooks@portlandoregon.gov. We accept .jpgs, .pngs, and .pdfs. Make sure your image is clear and a higher resolution if possible. Make sure to keep the original copy.
Although its buildings are closed, Multnomah County Library continues to offer virtual services. Children and families can participate in virtual storytimes and author readings, browse recommended reads, and get live homework help.
Bike to Books was started in 2017 by PBOT and Multnomah County Library to encourage kids to bike more and read books. Every May, we have invited students living in Multnomah County to design bike lane art for Portland’s "Bike to Books" design contest.
Entries must be the original artwork of children in the following grade brackets: Pre-Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd through 6th grade, and 7th through 12th grade. Multiple entries are welcome.
Grand prize winners will have their bike lane art installed on a Portland street by PBOT’s striping crews.
