Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN)
A Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (pronounced beacon) is a place to go in Portland after a major earthquake to ask for emergency assistance if phone service is down, or report severe damage or injury. The property was owned for many years by the Van Alstyne family. In the late 1970s, a plant nursery was established and operated for 20 years until the site was acquired by the city of Portland in 1998. A master plan for the park was completed in August 2000 and construction began in September 2003. Several community partners contributed toward the park's development, including Nike, Oregon State Parks & Recreation, Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Office of Transportation, and the Bureau of Maintenance. The community participated in a dedication ceremony during Neighbor’s Night Out on August 3, 2004. In 2016, a Portland Loo was installed with funding from the 2014 Parks Replacement Bond.
