Historic places associated with African American individuals, institutions, and events have long been underrepresented in Portland’s Historic Resource Inventory. The African American Historic Sites Initiative seeks to document and protect landmarks associated with the Black experience in Portland.

Design guidelines are intended to aid designers and developers in understanding Portland’s urban design expectations and to aid them in preparing for the urban design review process. The review process ensures that these expectations will be met for all proposals in Portland.

Certain development proposals affecting historic resources are subject to land use review and approval prior to construction. These mandatory regulations are codified in the Portland Zoning Code and are administered by the Bureau of Development Services.
