In the summer of 2015, Portland City Council approved a resolution directing the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) to establish a voluntary incentive-based program to advance the use of deconstruction as an alternative to mechanical demolition.

The deconstruction grant program helped fund approximately 25 different whole-house deconstruction projects and helped inform the adoption of Portland’s deconstruction requirements in October 2016.

Since then, the deconstruction industry has successfully matured to include numerous Certified Deconstruction Contractors and over 80 deconstruction permits over the course of a year.

BPS has released the case studies from three of the projects funded by the grant, to give insight into the results, costs, and salvaged materials.
